#1. My work was significant in my educational and personal growth, mainly because it made me step out of my comfort zone. On the educational side, i was put into the position of not being able to chose what type of work I got to do, or how much. Unlike school, where yo can sometimes chose the work that you do or when you do it, with an internship, you don't get that luxury and they decide for you. While on the personal side, I had to step out of my comfort zone when I needed to learn how to communicate with adults in an adult way, which is challenging for me, especially since I am an introvert.
#2. My view beyond high school changed when I saw how difficult the real world can be. No matter how much you say you knew it would be hard, you never really understand the challenge of it until you experience it first hand. Over my time as an intern, I began to see just how hard the real world is, and like most teens, I never really understood my parents when they would say how having a real job was much harder that school. After the last month, I can safely say I am beginning to have an understanding of that now. #3. Communication and collaboration played a huge role in understanding professional working environments. In a professional environment, like a business per say, you need to work with your peers in order to get the jobs done, unlike in a school setting, where the projects are designed around us, in a professional setting, we need to mold to the project, because they aren't there for our benefit, they're there in order to make the business run. If there is no struggle, there is no progress. -Frederick Douglass
My work was significant in the way that it allowed everyone else to get things done that they would not have been able to with out me. Partly due to the fact that I would have been very time consuming for them to do the job, so if I got it, they could work on the bigger picture and I could finish whatever job they needed me to complete. My project was at first just an idea, but it transformed into something real when I gave the idea to my mentor and he approved it. After that, I was just finding news sites, bloggers and other media sources to put our name on per say. Even If they never respond, which would be the worst case scenario, They at least know of our business and will possibly remember it for future use. Most of the skill that I needed to complete this task were researching and professional writing skills, along with communication. I will post again soon. I am incredibly sorry that this post is late, I had my driving class on Friday that lasted until 10, and on Saturday I went and completed me Sat 2 for US History, so i completely messed up the post, but here it is.
Some logical Ideas that can be used in the classroom that can be taken from our internship are; having us complete a "real world" task, such as business phone calls or writing professional letters, or having us learn time management by giving us a project that WE need to make due dates for. Other then that, most of the things that should be taught that would relate to internship should be real world skills that we would need to use in any professional setting. I will post again soon. Today, I looked at 3 other students blogs, Danielle - Roberto - Stephen, and commented/read about their internships. One of the things that was true through out all of the posts I have read it the fact that all of them have talked about how hard internship is compared to school. One of my main takeaways is that almost all of us need to be much more disciplined in an adult "job," including in appearance, conversation, context, working, and just about anything you do at your internship. Other than that, everyone's blog kind of varied on what they talked about, but on thing is for sure, internship is much harder than school, and I'm pretty sure everyone can agree with me on that. I will post again soon.
I am so sorry, but my computer spazzed out and didn't post two separate posts. So here goes nothing. Internship is a lot harder than actual school. First off, there are a lot more responsibilities than school and this is hard for me, because I had gotten used to the stead work load of school. Next, the work is a lot harder, because if you don't understand something, you can't always ask for help, you need to figure it out on your own, which can be challenging. Third, you have to interact with people in an adult way and you can't act like a teenager around your colleges. Lastly, time management is much more important and you cant procrastinate on any of your work. This practice has really helped me with my time management and when I go back to school, I feel that I will not procrastinate as much because of this experience. As for the rest of my life, that is a tough question to answer, especially for only the first week, so I don't think I can actually answer that right now, I will post again soon though.
Sorry again about this post being late, but I had my driving lesson that lasted till 10, so I was pretty tired. So anyway, the main story of Thursday was the fact that my mentor came to tour the site. I explained what I do, how everything works, and I showed her the grounds. Other than that, I was mainly working on what ever needed to be done or who ever needed me. I worked on the phones, Typed up documents and performed general maintenance. I drafted up another letter to send to NBC channel 7 news for San Diego. No one has message me back but I will stay positive, I will post again soon.
My main project for my internship is to find a media source, be it the news, local bloggers or journalists, and figure out how to have them do a article on our business. So far, my main outlet is the Union Tribune, my mentor and I have been working on a letter to send them so we could possible do a press release in the news paper. Mainly, my project requires me to sit at my computer and research possible news sources and try to contact them. I just sent the letter to the Union Tribune, so it is doubtful they will get back to me today, but when they do, i will talk about it in that post. I will have more as more becomes available, and I will post again soon.
Example of my letter: Dear Union Tribune, My name is Alexander Nazimov-Davis, I am a junior at High Tech High International in Point Loma and I am an intern for Good Earth Plants and GreenScaped Buildings. We are an award winning, locally owned business that designs, installs, and maintains interior and exterior landscapes since 1977. We are local experts at building Green roofs and Living Walls. Green roofs and Living walls not only can help reduce energy bills, but can reduce the storm water runoff as well. We also run a "Green Earth - Green Plants" certified business, approved by by Johnson Fediw Associates and the Advisory Committee of the Green Earth - Green Plants. Due to the recent public interest on the topic of sustainability and "Going Green", it could be interesting for your readers to learn about our sustainable business and practices. Local Green roof and Living walls are; The Fallen Star Green roof at UCSD, The Sharp Memorial Hospital Green roof, and the Fashion Valley Living wall. Thank you for consideration and have a great day. Best regards, Alex Nazimov-Davis Where I am interning is Good Earth Plants and GreenScaped Buildings. First, my internship times vary, but try to stay around 11 to 5. When you first see the one story building, you notice the large green roof, comprised of mainly native Californian plants. As you walk inside, you see a fish tank that recycles water through plants to clean the water to use for the fish. Next to the fish, is a large wall filled with packs and awards, containing tonnes of news articles all pertaining to the company, and many "green" awards. Inside the first room is the secretary and her desk, yet behind her is a couple of Living walls and products that show potential clients what we have to offer. If you walk past the sectary and turn right, there is a hallway with some bathrooms, not very impressive, but continue on into the kitchen. The kitchen has some living walls and an exit to the outside, but if you make another right, you walk in to my temporary office. It has a desk, a chair, a computer, and some random metal. On the outside, there is a huge court yard filled with plants and many different living walls. Continue back and you get to the area where we store the plants and a building that houses our marketers and botanist. The rest of the grounds and buildings are mainly office spaces or storage spaces, there are some pictures I have that you can look at. I'll post again soon. |
